The Maersk-CONCOR Reefer Rail Service: A First for India

In May 2026, A.P. Moller Maersk launched India’s first dedicated weekly reefer rail service  connecting Hyderabad’s pharmaceutical manufacturing cluster with Nhava Sheva port near Mumbai. The service was developed in partnership with Container Corporation of India, known as CONCOR.

This is a significant development. Before this, pharmaceutical companies in Hyderabad one of India’s biggest pharma manufacturing hubs relied on road transport to get their temperature-sensitive cargo to port. Road freight has real vulnerabilities: monsoon-related congestion, driver fatigue, variable transit times due to checkpoint delays, and the inherent unpredictability of long-haul trucking.

The new rail corridor addresses all of this. It operates on a fixed weekly schedule using 40- foot refrigerated containers. Pre-trip inspection compliance and container quality checks are built into every shipment. Under a single-window arrangement, Maersk handles inland rail movement, ocean freight, and shipment visibility all the way through.

The service connects Hyderabad exports to North America’s East Coast ports including Newark, Norfolk, Charleston, and Savannah, as well as Latin America and Europe. The modal shift from road to rail is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 3,000 tonnes annually, a number expected to rise as cargo volumes grow.

Thomas Theeuwes, Managing Director of Maersk South Asia, noted at the flag-off that the pharmaceutical sector demands precision, reliability, and accountability at every step, and this rail service is the direct answer to that demand. CONCOR’s CMD Sanjay Swarup added that the collaboration reflects growing industry confidence in rail as a dependable mode for high-value sensitive cargo.

Major Pharma Manufacturing Hubs and Their Logistics Needs

India’s pharmaceutical production is concentrated in a few clusters, each with distinct logistics requirements depending on what they make and where their markets are.

Hyderabad and Telangana

Often called India’s pharma capital, Hyderabad is home to a massive concentration of API manufacturers, biologics producers, and formulations companies. UPS Hyderabad Cross-Dock: In October 2024, UPS unveiled a dedicated healthcare- oriented cross-docking centre in Hyderabad with international freight forwarding capabilities. This facility is part of UPS’s 17-million-square-foot global GDP-conforming network, specifically designed to handle biologics and high-value pharmaceutical cargo.

Bengaluru Coolport: The Bengaluru Coolport is a specialised pharma export gateway at Kempegowda International Airport. It serves the city’s growing biotech and CRO ecosystem and handles temperature-controlled air exports under GDP-compliant conditions.

Ahmedabad CPC: The Centre for Perishable Cargo at Ahmedabad airport resumed operations in mid-2025, providing Gujarat’s massive pharmaceutical export industry with a dedicated temperature-controlled air cargo terminal capable of handling up to 40,000 metric
tonnes annually.

Snowman Logistics: In January 2024, Snowman inaugurated a new pharma-grade cold storage facility in western India adding approximately 5,000 pallets of 2 to 8 degree Celsius capacity specifically for vaccine and biologics clients. Gati Kausar and ColdEx have both announced reefer fleet expansion plans with continuous temperature monitoring.

Technology and Innovation in Pharma Cold Chain

The industry is moving fast on technology adoption, partly because compliance demands it and partly because the products are too valuable to manage with older systems. IoT-based temperature sensors now monitor cargo conditions in real time, transmitting alerts if any deviation occurs during transport or storage. RFID tracking gives visibility at the pallet and package level. Blockchain is being piloted for audit trails that cannot be altered critical when regulators and international buyers want proof that cold chain was maintained throughout.

In October 2024 the CDSCO rolled out QR-coded pharmaceutical packaging across leading brands, enhancing authenticity and traceability for export consignments. Here is something that does not get discussed enough: the pharma cold chain industry in India is facing a real shortage of trained people. Modern cold chain systems using ammonia based refrigeration, advanced automation, and IoT monitoring controllers require a different skill set than traditional mechanical refrigeration or general logistics handling.

Most operators know how to run a standard cold room. Far fewer know how to run a validated GDP-compliant facility, interpret temperature deviation reports, conduct qualification protocols, or manage a reefer container booking from a pharma exporter”s plant all the way to a port in Europe.
