New Shipping Service Connects Kochi with UAE, Oman and Yemen

Kochi’s Vallarpadam Terminal strengthens its Middle East connectivity with the launch of the MGR IFR container service Kochi’s Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) has added another important connection to the Middle East with the launch of the MGR IFR shipping service, linking Kochi directly with key ports in the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Yemen. The new service is expected to create additional opportunities for exporters and importers in Kerala and southern India by providing a more direct maritime connection to important regional markets.
The new service operates on a fortnightly basis, with the route covering Kochi, Nhava Sheva, Fujairah, Sohar, Aden and back to Kochi. The two vessels deployed for the service are M.V. Marsa Virgo and M.V. Marsa Zenith, each with a capacity of more than 500 TEUs per voyage. The inaugural call was made by M.V. Marsa Virgo at the DP World-operated Vallarpadam terminal. During its first call, the terminal handled more than 1,000 TEUs of cargo, marking the beginning of the new connection between Kochi and the Middle Eastern trade network.

Why the New Service Matters

For exporters and importers in Kerala, direct shipping connections can make a significant difference to cargo movement. The new service provides access to Fujairah in the UAE, Sohar in Oman and Aden in Yemen, giving businesses another option for moving containerised cargo into Middle Eastern markets and onward trade routes.
The additional connection can also help businesses manage cargo flows more efficiently, particularly when international shipping networks face congestion, schedule changes or other supply-chain disruptions. A more direct service can reduce the need for additional transshipment arrangements for certain cargo movements and improve connectivity between regional markets.

Boost for Kochi's Role in Container Trade

The development also comes at a time when Vallarpadam is recording strong growth in container handling. DP World Cochin's ICTT handled a record 97,952 TEUs in August 2026, representing a 51% increase compared with August 2025. The terminal has a stated full capacity of 2.5 million TEUs, with a 950-metre quay, a depth alongside of 17.6 metres, and the ability to accommodate vessels with a maximum length overall of 400 metres. It also has direct road and rail connectivity supporting cargo movement to markets across southern and other parts of India. The launch of the MGR IFR service therefore adds to Kochi's growing network of international shipping connections. With regular links to Middle Eastern ports and increasing container volumes, Vallarpadam is becoming increasingly important for businesses looking to connect Kerala and southern India with global trade routes.

Career Impact: Opportunities for Logistics Professionals

For students and professionals pursuing Logistics and Supply Chain Management, developments like this create opportunities across shipping operations, freight forwarding, documentation, customs clearance, container handling, port operations, transportation and supply chain coordination. As more international services operate through Kochi, the demand for professionals who understand shipping procedures, container movement and international trade is likely to expand alongside the region's logistics activity. In short, the new MGR IFR service is more than a new shipping route for Kochi—it adds another link between Kerala's businesses and the wider Middle Eastern trade network, while strengthening Vallarpadam's role in India's container logistics system.
