On February 17, 2025, A.P. Moller–Maersk and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore collaboration in ship repair, maintenance, and shipbuilding activities in India.
Key Aspects of the Partnership:
- Technical Expertise Sharing: The collaboration aims to share technical knowledge to achieve global standards in ship maintenance.
- Ship Repair and Dry Docking: The partnership will focus on ship repair, dry docking, and new building opportunities, initially targeting vessels up to 7,000 TEU for afloat repairs and up to 4,000 TEU for dry-docking.
- Training and Skill Development: Joint training programs and skill development
initiatives will be implemented for both CSL employees and Maersk seafarers.
Strategic Significance:
This partnership aligns with India’s Vision 2047 maritime objectives, aiming to position the country among the top five global maritime hubs.
The collaboration is timely, as the global shipping industry anticipates capacity constraints in ship repair yards worldwide. By leveraging Maersk’s global expertise, CSL aims to enhance
its capabilities and capture a larger share of the global ship repair and building market.
About the Companies:
- A.P. Moller–Maersk: An integrated logistics company operating in over 130 countries, employing around 100,000 people. Maersk is committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 across its entire business.
- Cochin Shipyard Limited: Established in 1972, CSL is India’s largest shipbuilder, serving both the navy and private clients. The company has recently invested over $100 million to expand its facilities, including a new 42-acre ship repair yard at Cochin Port, capable of repairing up to five ships simultaneously.
This strategic alliance is expected to significantly contribute to India’s maritime sector growth, supporting the government’s vision of developing world-class ship repair and building capabilities within the country.
